At least I think it is A.californica. It looks just like A. californica
I saw elsewhere, and I found it wild growing in a garden of a friend in
California, so I guess it must be, right?

Another photo of the same plant, a couple months later. It definitely does not want to grow above 3 ft tall.

In the spring of 1998, it started flowering, which should make it possible to finally ID the plant. The inflorescence lasted for about two weeks and had no discernible scent.
